Things I've built

DeskLab

Free, offline desktop tools

A family of four open-source desktop apps led by DeskFolio, an offline PDF editor that merges, splits, compresses, signs, converts and OCRs without uploading anything. Around it: DeskZero keeps folders tidy, DeskMedic checks and fixes Windows PCs, and DeskShot takes and marks up screenshots. No accounts, no uploads, no telemetry.

Problem

Everyday desktop chores, like sorting downloads, freeing disk space, signing a PDF or blurring a screenshot, usually mean an online service that wants an account and your files, or a heavy app full of upsells.

The goal was small tools that work offline, show what they will do before they do it, never lose a file, and look and behave like one family.

What I built

  • DeskZero: a Rust sorting engine with rules, a background folder watcher, a duplicate finder, an archive, full undo, and a search bar on Ctrl+Shift+Space for files, folders and apps.
  • DeskMedic: a Windows helpdesk toolkit that maps a drive from its NTFS file table in seconds, cleans up safely, runs a plain-English health check and network doctor, and has fifteen one-click remedies with restore points.
  • DeskFolio: an offline PDF tool built on pdf.js and pdf-lib: view, organise, merge, split, compress (Rust), fill and sign, convert to Word and Excel or from Office files, and OCR scans with tesseract.
  • DeskShot: screenshots that freeze every monitor at once, an editor with arrows, steps, pixelate and black-out, a private-detail finder for emails, phone numbers, IPs and card numbers, offline Copy text, pins and searchable history.
  • One shared shell for all four: a menu bar, compact sidebar, Ctrl+K command search, About window, signed automatic updates, and the apps open each other (a PDF found in DeskZero's search opens straight in DeskFolio).
  • A GitHub Actions pipeline per app that tests every change and builds the installers; the macOS builds are signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple.

Rust, Tauri, React, TypeScript, pdf.js, tesseract.js, Konva, GitHub Actions

Outcome

All four are released on GitHub under the MIT licence: DeskZero 0.5.0, DeskMedic 0.6.0, DeskFolio 0.2.0 and DeskShot 0.1.0, for Windows and, except DeskMedic, macOS (DeskZero and DeskFolio also run on Linux).
