Things I've built

DeskZero

An open-source desktop app that sorts loose files into folders by simple rules. It shows a preview before anything moves, never deletes, and every move can be undone. Works offline on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Problem

Downloads and Desktop folders fill up with loose files, and sorting them by hand is tedious.

The goal was an organizer that needs no account and no internet, shows exactly what it will do before it moves anything, never deletes a file, and can put everything back.

What I built

  • A sorting engine in Rust. Files go into category folders like Images and Documents, or wherever a rule sends them. Rules can match on name, extension, type, size and dates, can build date folders from a photo's EXIF date, and can rename while sorting.
  • A desktop app built with Tauri and a React and TypeScript interface. It sits in the tray, watches folders like Downloads in the background, and picks up a file only once it has finished downloading.
  • A preview of every move before it happens, a choice on name clashes (keep both, replace or skip), and a history that undoes any batch and removes the folders it left empty.
  • Extra tools: a search bar on Ctrl+Shift+Space that finds files, folders and apps from anywhere, a duplicate finder that compares SHA-256 hashes and moves extra copies aside, an archive for files untouched for 30 days or more, and an opt-in Explorer right-click menu on Windows.
  • Signed in-app updates, and a GitHub Actions pipeline that builds the Windows, macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Linux installers for every tagged release. The Rust code has 84 automated tests.

Stack

Rust, Tauri, React, TypeScript, GitHub Actions

Outcome

Version 0.3.1 is out on GitHub under the MIT licence, with installers for Windows, macOS and Linux. The Windows installer is about 3 MB.
